Looks like another wave of that "blue" stuff going across the Midwest, maybe this one won't be so mean to Washington, but I think I might be manning MY shovel this time.
I'm finished with the cold this year, when the Bar B Q won't light because the propane is too cold, it's time for a little sunshine and longer days to warm things up a little.
Drive careful in that blue stuff, it can be hard to see sometimes.

Well, so far, "we" have lucked out in my local area with no more than about an inch of snow, the photo below was New Years Day a few years ago and I wouldn't have to drive more than an hour to see this kind of pile today.
I'm in the Great Lakes region but we got rain when everyone else got snow. Then on the cold windy days the "lake effect" was going the "other way" dumping across the lake.
Anyway, I'm not complaining about the lack of snow, I see right now on the radar that there's a whack of that white s... in areas of Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. This one might just get "us"

One of the hazards of winter driving are little (and not so little) chunks of ice from the tops of trucks and trailers. In this photo there are lots of little chunks of ice that just blew off the top of a truck maybe 1/4 mile ahead and the are all still moving and bouncing around amongst the traffic.
These little pieces of ice may not be too dangerous for vehicle control but they can do a number on a paint job, like stone chips, another thing auto insurance doesn't really cover well because of the deductible.
The big chunks can be extremely dangerous or even deadly, they can be large enough and heavy enough to go right through a windshield if struck at high speed.
A large layer of ice formed on a trailer can be a foot thick or more and can be as much as eight feet wide and twenty or more feet long.
A large chunk of ice can fly off a truck without any warning and break into a number of large damaging chunks that you can not avoid, unless of course you leave a good safe distance between vehicles.
Just another reason to keep your distance on the highway and keep your car insurance paid up.

Another swath of that white stuff and another surge for car accident lawyers and auto insurance agents, There will be accidents, injuries and insurance damage claims.
I know it was wishful thinking but I really hoped that the snow was finished for the winter but it looks like I'm in for another bout of shoveling my windrow.

But with my luck . . .
Take care if you have to drive in the stuff, leave early, keep lots of room between you and the other guy and . . . SLOW DOWN!

If the guy in front of you stops real quick,
CAN YOU STOP TOO?
I was on the highway yesterday and couldn't believe there was not a serious accident.
A pack of cars (maybe six) came flying onto a highway ramp behind a slow truck. Several cars were severely tailgating as they entered the highway and panic ensued as they caught up to the truck. A couple of them managed to merge across into a middle lane but one guy who may not have seen the truck till the others moved, slammed on his brakes and spun off the road in a cloud of smoke and dust. I think he hit a road sign but I'm not sure as it was happening behind me now.
If this had happened today in the snow, the one car that spun out wouldn't be the only one to lose it.
On the highway in the snow, dangers of a collision are increased exponentially so you have to add that "exponential" factor to your defensive driving techniques.
This winter has been pretty brutal in some areas so far but there's still more to come so take care out there.

Well, it's here. The snow has arrived and ten minutes into my first flurry a car spun out in front of me as I was turning through an intersection.
The driver looked like he saw a ghost, he did a 180 and was facing me (driving a truck right at him) when he stopped.
Winter driving is much different than warm weather driving with some obvious hazards but sometimes there are hidden hazards as well such as "black ice". Black ice is a thin layer of ice that forms on the road that is invisible and causes a tremendous number of accidents each year (mostly vehicles in the ditch).
Whenever the temps drop below or even near freezing drivers must adjust their driving habits to suit the conditions. SLOW DOWN, LEAVE MORE DISTANCE BETWEEN VEHICLES and PREPARE TO STOP SOONER.
Drive safe!

I heard on the news today that there has been snow in Toronto 42 days so far this winter and now we have this massive winter storm from Friday afternoon through the whole day Saturday to contend with.
Enough already, I have a six foot high pile of dirty grey ice at the bottom of my driveway already without this storm dropping another foot of snow to be shoveled on top of the heavy slush the snow plow is kind enough to leave me.
The snow plow driver must like me, he always leaves me a lot more than any of my neighbors, Maybe it's because I'm on the corner of a busy 4 lane road and a side street and when they "round the corner" the bulk ends up in my driveway.
My neighbor will have a little pile maybe a foot high and two feet wide, I walk out and see a pile in my driveway three feet high and six feet wide. My neighbors laugh about it, xxxholes!
WITH a snowblower it takes me 45 minutes to make a hole big enough for my car to get out cause it's usually refrozen icy slush and too high for the snow blower to bite.
Maybe I should move, get away from the corner, maybe to Ft. Lauderdale or Datona, I don't think the plow driver can push it that far.
