This accident may have been a case of driver fatigue or perhaps health related.
The tracks leaving the road were gradual and straight with no skid marks at all.
The area where it occurred is near the end of a very long stretch of highway bordered only by fields and wooded areas for miles, a fertile area for tunnelvision to occur.

I have posted this video of a truck driving over my camera before, I need to shoot it again but this time with some lighting on the ground pointing upwards to light up the chassis as the truck drives over.
I don't work for this company anymore (LMT Transportation But I still do their website), every truck they had was immaculate, Now either Ken or Karl's truck would be newest looking and somewhat clean.
I'll see how it comes out if I can muster up the lighting and wiring if procrastination doesn't set in.
I really meant to do it all last summer and even had my camera in hand looking for Karl one day that we both had nothing to do but something came up before I found him so I put it off again.

As Safety and Compliance guy for a trucking company several years ago, I took a call from a lady about our driver bearing down on her in heavy traffic, she was terrified for herself and two kids in the car, she said she thought she was going to die. She later wrote me a letter passionately describing her ordeal.
Unfortunately this happens all too often and does sometimes cause drivers to panic and make a mistake which on the highway can be deadly.
It doesn't have to be a truck though. Some drivers can be intimidated into making a foolish mistake they would not have made otherwise by a car tailgating them or it could develop into a case of road rage.
Don't Tailgate!
Most of the accidents I see (and I see a lot) are from people following too close! Unfortunately we all pay in higher car insurance costs because of it.
Without the stupid accidents, our auto insurance rates would most certainly drop.
Leave at least TWO to THREE seconds between vehicles - in good conditions.

Truck trailer plummets sixty feet off overpass and crushes 4 cars below killing one man.
I had to make my way around the massive congestion caused by this crash three times today with one trip passing right by the scene. My camera battery was dead when I drove past the scene though unfortunately, I had my camera on too long earlier taking the long distance shots shown here.
I have seen many many crashes over the years but never anything as dramatic as this one. The wreckage was more like a pile of scrap metal pushed across the road.
All together the westbound lanes were closed about twelve hours for the investigation and clean-up.
Beyond the human cost of the tragedy, can you imagine the other costs of this accident paralyzing the south west corner of the city the entire business day and into the evening.

Another case of a driver somehow being distracted when the brakes came on.
The pick up truck careened into the silver car thrusting the poor guy into the black SUV in front of him and shoving the SUV into a tractor trailer.
Highway driving requires constant concentration on the task of driving.
Momentary distractions can have a devastating outcome as traffic conditions can change in a split second.
Leave enough space for your reaction time plus a little extra to account for traffic behind you.

How did this happen?
Was he following too close?
Was he fiddling with some GPS gadget?
Was he making a call on a cell phone?
Was he trying to send a text message?
Was he too tired to be driving?
Was he suffering from a medical condition?
Was he looking for his next delivery information?
Was he distracted by something he saw?
Maybe he was checking out the architecture and marble work of this building when the brakes went on.
Could you imagine if there was a car between these trucks.
